Cheap Images. The Popularization of Art Historical Colour Reproductions in the 20th Century (B02)
Subject Area
Art History
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 438577023
The project examines the role of coloured reproductions in the visual culture of the 19th and early 20th centuries in two Research Areas (RA). RA I focuses on coloured images around 1900, RA II investigates the use of coloured reproductions by the UNESCO after 1945. The research questions in both areas are the same: What intricate and problematic role do cheap colour images play in the communication of art historical content? And how do ideas of “democratisation” transform the access of the many to educational ideals and cultural values?
