Racial Capitalism: Property Relationships of Black Families in the Age of Segregation (A02)

Subject Area Modern and Contemporary History
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424638267

This historical project examines the significance of race in the history of property in the USA from the end of slavery to the 1930s. After 1865, Black Americans could no longer be treated as property objects, while at the same time they were prevented from becoming property subjects. The project examines their practical options and opportunities to acquire property against all odds. It focuses (first) on Black smallholder families with their own farms in rural South Carolina and (second) on wealthy Black families in urban centers in the South.
