Due to new challenges such as individualized products, shortened product life cycles and technological developments such as modular production technologies, the process industry faces a paradigm shift, which has to be supported by appropriate planning. This research project analyzes economic aspects of utilizing modular production concepts in the process industry. The aim of the project is the development of a holistic hierarchical planning system for supply chain planning in the context of modular production concepts, in order to promote an economically advantageous development of this innovative technology. First, requirements for supply chain planning and the possible refinements of the market structure are determined in a potential assessment. The planning system with its strategic and tactical planning modules is concretized by developing innovative mathematical optimization models. Those are the basis for future planning tools which can be derived by specialization of the presented models and methods. The innovative character of the large-scale planning models is attributed to the degree of flexibility as well as to the integrated consideration of capacities, processes, production and locations with their dynamics and uncertainties. Innovative algorithmic methods are developed and used to solve complex mathematical optimization models in reasonable time. By analyzing different scenarios regarding the realization of technology and market structure, which are integrated into the planning models, it is possible to derive economical requirements for the technological design of modular production concepts.
