Project B05 investigates morphosyntactic prominence relations in languages with grammatical profiles that differ from those found in better studied European languages. We investigate western Austronesian languages with symmetrical voice systems, and Papuan languages from the Trans New Guinea phylum which exhibit so-called ‘optional’ ergative marking, and make extensive use of clause chaining, often in combination with elaborate switch-reference systems. Our focus in phase III will be on the role of morphosyntactic (and prosodic) constructions in discourse organization, with a special focus on boundaries, in both narrative and conversational discourse.
