Subject Area

Term
from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 244798977
Religious speech was (and is) foundational to the development and stabilization of Christian identity. By scrutinizing selected collections of sermons (Peter Chrysologus, Caesarius of Arles), the subproject investigates whether late antique Christian religious speech a) employed education, that is, rhetoric (formal aspect), b) communicated education (material aspect) and c) theorized this process with regard to form, content, and agency (didactic aspect). This approach to aims and means of communication of education in sermons will shed new light on Late Antiquity which witnessed a remarkable flourishing of religious speech.
