Lipidology of host cells and viral envelopes

We have developed a method by nano-ESI-MS/MS to qualitatively and quantitatively assess membrane lipids including each of their molecular species at the low picomole level. This method has opened the door to compare lipid compositions of membrane systems that, at a highly purified stage, are available only in minute quantities. This novel and hitherto not widely available method will be used to quantitatively analyse the lipid compositions of viral particles in order to compare them with their host membranes. These investigations are instrumental for our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie formation of virus particles.
