We propose a project to study the kinematic development of complex inversion structures on two case studies in Central Germany (Oberes Allertal and Sontra). We will target specific, recurrent structural peculiarities identified in a preceding SPP subproject. These fit none of the models proposed in the literature for inversion structures. Kinematic reconstruction is an efficient tool to understand such complex structures, even where the evolution of inverted rifts and graben structures is combined with diapirism that makes quantitative restoration difficult. The basinwide, uniform pulse of Late Cretaceous contraction offers the opportunity to identify the principal factors, such as the initial salt thickness or variations of the suprasalt stratigraphy, that led to the evolution of different structure types in the same tectonic environment. In the spectrum of inversion structures observed, the two target areas represent end members with different degrees of salt influence. The Allertal structure is well explored through drilling, mining and recent geological mapping. The Sontra study will benefit from the high resolution database created during planning and construction of the A44 motorway in Central Germany.
