Project Details
Spatially resolved characterization of damage initiation and growth at the micrometer scale (Project B03)
Subject Area
Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term
since 2025
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 278868966
Project B03 of TRR188 examines microscale damage mechanisms. The first funding period investigated the role of mechanical heterogeneity on damage initiation, while the second researched strain hardening's role on damage suppression. B03 developed an isotropic strain hardening model crucial for CP-FEM and determined the fracture toughness of single martensite islands. Electrical resistance measurements of pore containing microstructures were used to validate homogenization models. The third funding period expands tools to nanoCT and DCT, targeting aluminum alloys. Objectives include DP800 RVE validation, identification of mechanical properties relevant for damage initiation and growth of aluminum alloys at the micron scale, and an accelerated identification of mechanical properties at the micron scale.
