In this project, we design and analyze multiscale approaches and domain decomposition methods for the efficient simulation of solutions to the wave equation in strongly heterogeneous media, encoded by highly oscillatory coefficients in the equation. We particularly consider the case where oscillations are space- and time-dependent, which is of interest in view of recent progress in the understanding and simulation of wave processes in spatiotemporally modulated metamaterials. We construct numerical methods that are tailored to such problems and avoid unfeasible global computations.
