SFB 623:  Molecular Catalysts: Structure and Functional Design

Subject Area Chemistry
Biology
Medicine
Term from 2002 to 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5485348

The collaborative research centre 623 is aiming towards broad, interdisciplinary basic research in the field of chemical catalysis, ranging from biocatalysis in the living cell to large scale catalytic processes for industrial production of commodity chemicals. The specific focus of the program is upon catalysts with well-defined molecular architectures. Structural principles and the prerequisites as well as the mechanistic details of their function will be elucidated for a wide variety of molecular catalysts in homogeneous and heterogeneous phase by joining the experimental and theoretical expertise of all research groups involved and by employing all state-of-the-art research methodologies and instrumentation of modern molecular chemistry. The discovery and development of novel strategies to study and identify elementary steps and intermediates of catalytic cycles, the optimisation of selectivity and activity patterns of established, relevant catalytic systems, the search for new types of molecules with catalytic potential and for unprecedented basic reactions suitable for catalysis, are fundamental goals of the collaborative research centre. In the ideal case, its research activities will eventually lead to the rational design of new molecular catalysts on the basis of mechanistic understanding and of insights into the relationship between molecular structure and catalytic function. The apparent significance of fundamental catalysis research for aspects of industrial application will be appropriately taken into consideration.
