SFB 575:  Experimental Hepatology

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2001 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5484543

Due to high morbidity and mortality liver diseases are of extraordinary social and economical interest. The aim of this collaborative research centre 575 is to gain new insights into the function of the normal liver and the molecular mechanisms underlying liver damage leading to clinical symptoms. Thereby a panel of methods ranging from molecular and cell biological techniques to modern in vivo imaging is applicated. Special attention is given to the complex communication between different liver cell types and the involved mechanisms of inter- and intracellular signal transduction. Exemplified with the hepatic encephalopathy the pathomechanism of an extrahepatic manifestation of liver cirrhosis will be examined. The results may allow the development of new strategies for the treatment of liver disease.
