Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

A central part of the electronic infrastructure of the research unit is the common Web portal called Earth Rotation and Global Dynamic Processes (work package C). It realizes the entry point for all services provided by the project. The portal’s homepage gives access to three subsections, one for the public presentation of the research unit, one for the information system ERIS, and one for internal communication. During the second funding period especially the information system ERIS has been enhanced and improved. Basic information on Earth rotation and data services were added including descriptive graphics, as well as access to interactive tools. On the other hand research results are published via the website and publications and presentations are cited. Work package A deals with the data preparation and data networking. To ensure interoperability the EOP and geophysical fluids data and model series are transformed into standardized data formats. Based on the XML versions developed for the IERS the XML schemata and the transformation routines are revised to harmonize the data structure and to enhance the machine readability. In this context also data from the research unit have been added to the IERS data centre, including XML representations and XSL transformations. While XML schemata describe the technical data structure of data series stored in XML, metadata are needed to describe the content of the series, how the data are produced, the authorship, the availability of the data, parameterization etc. In cooperation with the IERS Central Bureau metadata generation routines according to the ISO standard 19115 have been developed. According to this metadata schema also metadata are generated for the data produced in the research unit. For exchanging metadata and integrating metadata catalogues, a standardized interface Catalogue Service Web (CSW) based on Web Services technology was established. For the Combination and Comparison package (work package B) first a conceptual framework has been developed. In this concept, this package is no longer called “simulation”. The contributions of the project partners focus on providing appropriate data series exemplarily for different aspects of Earth rotation and scientific information. The Combination and Comparison Tool is an interactive web application that includes the combination of these data and information to an integrated system. It allows the user to explore Earth rotation interactively via the Web site. Case studies and their visualizations, enhanced with metadata illustrate the influences of the geophysical fluids like ocean or atmosphere on the variability of Earth rotation. For this application the XML data and metadata created in work package A are used. Data from IERS data centre, including data produced in the research unit, were incorporated. But there is also an interface to load local data. Furthermore, the tool involves the procedures of time series analyses developed for the Data Analysis Tool (e.g. statistics, filters, spectral analyses, resampling, and interpolation). Complementary enhancements of existing tools have been executed such as for the Data Analysis Tool, for the EOP Reader, and other geodetic applications. These changes improve the usability of the applications and supply extended probabilities for use. For more details see www.erdrotation.de
