The research project comprises the synthesis and characterization of catalytic periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO), which contain bridge-bonded organic groups directly integrated into the silica framework. These materials shall be used either in the epoxidation of propene or the hydroxylation of phenol. The PMOs offer several advantages compared to conventional catalysts; for example, no undesirable by-products or large amounts of aqueous waste will be obtained. Furthermore, the catalytic reactions can be carried out with molecular oxygen (air) instead of hydrogen peroxide, which is an expensive and hazardous oxidizing agent. Moreover, such new materials can be used in order to receive higher selectivities with respect to the desired products.
