Verse-Novells of the 13th-15th Centuries. Text Selection, Translation and Commentary

With the five volumes of the edition "Deutsche Versnovellistik des 13.-15. Jahrhunderts" (published by Schwabe 2020), a long-term project funded by the German Research Foundation, we finally dispose of an edition comprising 175 Middle High German Versnovellen /Mären. This edition meets all scholarly requirements by editing closely transmission-oriented, and takes into account the scholarly discussion about the respective genre. Our project aims at translating 42 of the edited text into Modern German and at providing a detailed and substantial commentary on the use of literary motifs as well as on the history of literature and genre. In this way, the transfer of what the edition provides in high quality to academic teaching and for reception beyond the study of German Language and Literature is to be supported, or rather made possible. In order to be able to cope with this ambitious challenge adequately, we have selected (in the case of multiple transmission) one version of each of the 42 texts. Experienced and proven colleagues within German Medieval Studies were invited to translate and comment on them.
