Hebrew and Aramaic binding fragments scattered in German libraries and archives will be identified and analysed according to the palaegraphical and historical standards. The material will form the basis of a reconstruction of the literary culture of the Jews at the end of the Medieval ages. The catalogue of all newly discovered fragments will provide an important tool for any future project on Hebrew book and manuscript culture. The fragments have been preserved by chance in the spines and covers of books and manuscripts. These findings have not been researched well in Germany, although in other European countries several projects have been undertaken. The project aims to analyse the fragments according to their regional dispersion and scattering. The catalogue tries to take into account although the different provenances of the discovered materials.
