The primary research question in project B01 is whether flexible adjustment in meaning during incremental, compositional interpretation (more specifically: complement coercion) should be viewed as an integral part of composition or whether it constitutes a creative repair mechanism that augments linguistic productivity. The project will use large-scale (citizen science) and small-scale experiments to collect offline data and develop a formal model of complement coercion that will be tested in a number of online processing experiments and also take into account the larger discourse context.
