The origin of KTB fluids and possible pressure induced variations on the fluid chemistry during a long-term pumping test at the KTB pilot borehole (KTB-VB) will be investigated. The produced crustal fluid will be analysed repeatedly for major and trace elements (including REE and yttrium) as well as selected isotopes (18O/D). The same set of hydrogeochemical properties of shallow and deep ground waters in the vicinity of the KTB site will be mapped; during the active pumping period every month repeated samples will be taken from those ground waters with the strongest deep fluid signature. In combination with the continuously monitored parameters this data set allows us to (i) determine the degree of contamination by drilling additives, (ii) characterise the origin of the KTB fluid, (iii) detect and model possible changes of the fluid chemistry induced by pressure variations during the pumping test, and (iv) make assumptions about the inhomogeneity and nature of the fluid reservoir(s) and/or the fracture permeabilities.
