Reservoir management optimization Water supply enhancement Water quality Sufficient drinking water supply is not possible due to pesticides and salinity in the lower Amu Darya region. The only way to ensure a fast and sustainable supply with drinking water is to use the reservoir system of Tuyamuyn, particularly the Kaparas reservoir, to store the water from the Amu- Darya, which carry only during some periods a minimum of mineralized substances and pesticides. Therefore innovative optimization techniques are urgently needed. To achieve an common optimzation for water quality and quantity control, to provid steering parameters and to reduce the measurable parameters while operating the reservoirs, it is necessary to develop innovative methods based on coupling actual optimization models and quality models. The aim of the project will be an novel development of goal functions using adapted simulation models. The models will be tested using existing data and measured field data. Based on the expected innovation in water quality modeling an improved development of management strategies is to expect. The interdisciplinary research approach is based on the joint experience of the NIS partners on the Amu-Darya basin water management and of the INTAS members on the subjects of water management (FGGM, Univ. Hannover) and ecology in semiarid regions in the Mediterranean (Italy).
