In high mobility two-dimensional electron systems, subjected to a strong perpendicular magnetic field and cooled down to millikelvin temperatures, the strong repulsive Coulomb interaction between the electrons forces them to make an alliance with the elementary flux quanta threading the sample in order to minimize the interaction energy. The strong correlation between electrons and flux quanta at commensurate ratios results in the formation of composite fermions and the appearance of fractional quantum Hall states. Experimental probes other than conventional dc-magnetotransport, such as the electronic compressibility, the microwave photoconductivity and the time-resolved transport, will be brought to bear on single and bilayer quantum Hall systems in an attempt to further clarify these correlation effects. Emphasis will be put on addressing unresolved issues about the energy dispersion of composite fermions and to obtain information about the low-energy excitations at the edges.
