Project identifier

At the university part of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), a high-resolution ion mobility spectrometer with coupled mass spectrometric detection is to be procured . This will allow ion-specific collision cross sections to be determined with high accuracy and compared with the predictions of structural models. This allows mass-selective, structural characterization of large, isolated molecular ions in gas phase. Furthermore, isomer or conformer distributions can be investigated with sufficient collision cross-section resolution. In recent years, there has been a significant technology push in the ion mobility sector, which has led to the availability of instruments that can achieve a collision cross-section resolution of 400 (for parent ions and their charged fragments) while maintaining very high mass resolution. This allows many new molecular chemistry problems to be addressed in gas phase as well as in solution as described in the proposal with examples from inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.
