This project is concerned with the formulation of a cultural sociological theory of human categorization. It aims to advance and augment the social theoretical fundamental research of the CRC and to situate and demarcate its subject matter within social theory writ large: as one, hitherto theoretically overlooked, case of cultural differentiation alongside the well-known functional and stratificatory variants. The central issues of this project are: What kind of cultural differentiation is human categorization? How is it connected with forms of social and societal differentiation?
