Uncovering of molecular mechanisms involved in biofilm-associated peri-implant infections (B02)

In subproject B02 pathomechanisms of peri-implant infections will be elucidated and infection-specific characteristics identified that can reliably distinguish pathogenic biofilms from apathogenic bacterial implant colonisation to enable early diagnosis of infections. Comprehensive studies will be conducted on a large patient cohort to study the diversity and congruence of bacterial characteristics and correlate them to the severity of clinical and pathological symptoms. In addition to microscopic (CLSM, SEM, AFM) and bacterial diversity analyses (metagenomics), activity patterns of biofilms (metatranscriptomics) will be analysed to identify signal patterns and obtain essential information on biofilm pathogenicity.
