The project will examine the era of the “New Sensibility” (ca. 1965-1975). In this period of recent German-language literature, media and theory many writers, film-makers, artists and critics included popular culture and Pop in experimental modes of writing and production as well as in critical discourses. This, however, was regarded as a provocation by the gatekeepers of the cultural and academic establishment, especially by literary critics and scholars – not least because new esteem for the popular threatened to undermine the high/low dichotomy.
