Pop, Literature and the “New Sensibility”: Theories, Ways of Writing, Aesthetic Experiments (A06)

Subject Area German Literary and Cultural Studies (Modern German Literature)
General and Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 438577023

The project will examine the era of the “New Sensibility” (ca. 1965-1975). In this period of recent German-language literature, media and theory many writers, film-makers, artists and critics included popular culture and Pop in experimental modes of writing and production as well as in critical discourses. This, however, was regarded as a provocation by the gatekeepers of the cultural and academic establishment, especially by literary critics and scholars – not least because new esteem for the popular threatened to undermine the high/low dichotomy.
