The fundamental origin of almost all fluctuation-driven phenomena can be tracked down to the dynamics of atoms, electrons and spins on atomistic scales. Here we use ultrafast double-probe electron microscopy to understand spontaneous and fluctuation reaction paths in magnet materials, electronic circuitry and phase transitions with femtosecond and picometre resolution in space and time.
