The overall goal of the project is to study fluctuations of designed molecular spin systems when driven beyond equilibrium. This will provide detailed information about ground and excited states and their response to a time-dependent and noisy environment. Novel molecular systems, such as molecular switches with spin centers and molecular magnets, are synthesized, deposited on substrates, and investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Extension of the STM setup towards spin-resonance spectroscopy will provide an extensive playground to probe the dynamical behavior of systems and the influence of the combined effects of tunneling current, ac-electric field and, in some cases, of magnetic interactions.
