Characterization and modulation of oscillatory bursting activity within the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical network in PD (C01)

Subject Area Clinical Neurology; Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424778381

In the first funding period, we identified cortical responses evoked by single-pulse stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN). We established a relationship between these responses and clinical outcome, which could be utilized to determine optimal STN deep brain stimulation (DBS). Within the new funding period, this knowledge will be used to characterize the temporal dynamics of the basal-ganglia-thalamo-cortical activity to better understand the modulatory effects of STN-DBS on this network. Based on these insights, adaptive stimulation protocols will be developed to modulate abnormal dynamics and provide more efficient STN-DBS.
