This project is concerned with the influence of cloud turbulence on droplet growth and precipitation. To this end numerical simulations are performed, which include large range of length scales (from micrometers to kilometres) and time scales (from milliseconds to hours). The applied models include DNS for simulation of droplet interaction in turbulent flows, LES for simulation of shallow convection (cumulus clouds), cloud-resolving mesoscale models for simulation of deep convection (shower clouds) as well as box- and one-dimensional models for cloud microphysics. The aim of the project is to quantify the influence of turbulence on cloud droplet formation and include this effect in parameterizations of microphysical processes for simulation of precipitation from shallow and deep cumulus clouds.
