Project Details
Role of the gut microbiome in the decompensation of chronic liver disease with portal hypertension (A09)
Subject Area
Gastroenterology
Term
since 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 403224013
Circulating metabolites in the blood may derive from the gut microbiota and are possibly responsible for decompensation in patients with liver cirrhosis. During the first funding period, project A09 described distinct changes that occurred in the blood metabolome in cirrhotic patients and revealed two promising metabolites: tartaric acid and mevalonic acid. Project A09 investigates the source of the two metabolites, their contribution to decompensation as well as their therapeutic potential. Project A09 will provide insights into how these metabolites contribute to organ decompensation and will identify novel therapeutic options targeting the gut-liver axis.
