The overall goal of the B1 project is to provide a sound metrological basis for the development of channel models for THz communications and provide input for the process in project area C on system metrology. The basis for the measurements carried out in project B1 are channel sounding equipment using the corresponding procedures provided by project A2 and the mature equipment of THz Time Domain Spectroscopy. We will consider five aspects of the characterisation of the propagation channel. Based on the material measurements from phase I of the project, it turned out that building materials with complex internal mesoscopic structures cannot be modelled with traditional scattering theories. Therefore, in phase II we will study and propose appropriate new ways to model such materials. In the second activity, we propose to characterize the transmission channels with highly defocused beams in order to obtain information about the relative contribution of scattering and geometrical blockage of the channels by humans and everyday objects as function of frequency. This will provide important input to the beam tracking and beam searching activities in project C1 as well as to the third activity in Project B1 on propagation aspects of physical layer security taking into account moving scattering and/or blocking objects. The two other activities will focus on the characterisation of multipath propagation in rich scattering industrial environments and on multi-link connections such as multi-hop links and distributed antenna systems to support metrological grade system evaluation.
