The Municipal Archive of the City of Braunschweig has a large collection of leaflets and posters from the era 1848 to 1993. Both quantitatively and qualitatively they represent exceptional and partially unique records. The archive therefore applies for funding within the DFG call “Digitisation of Archival Sources“.In addition to the complete digitization of about 800 posters (with circa 1,000 single pages) by an external service provider the applicant also intends their in-depth description according to Standard ISAD (G) by the archive’s own resources. This would considerably improve search options and the use of posters could be intensified through research. In the course of the project the posters will be published online via the search system of the German Digital Library. This will considerably improve the structuring of information and accessibility of an important collection of posters in a municipal archive in Germany. In addition, the existing cooperation with other institutions and scientific users of the Municipal Archive of the City of Braunschweig would be promoted and expanded.Another goal of the digitisation project is the long-term preservation of the sources by means of a fundamental restoration of about 50 per cent of the posters. This is an absolute prerequisite for professional and material-specific digitization. The Municipal Archive of the City of Braunschweig has its own restoration workshop with specialist staff.
