The core expertise and interest of the research group are the dynamical processes in condensed matter, employing mainly bulk and thin film heterostructure samples. While bulk samples can be grown by several groups at II. Physikalisches Institut, currently we have no facility for the fabrication of a broad spectrum of complex oxide epitaxial thin films, which are of high relevance for device applications. Epitaxial heterostructures have also the advantage that one can often grow systems which are very difficult (or even impossible) to obtain in single crystalline form. Laser ablation system for complex oxide thin film epitaxial growth (LAFIGO) is a unique system for epitaxial heterostructures of complex oxide materials. Employing laser ablation processes for the growth of thin films of materials that have complex stoichiometry has proven to be very successful and often the only way to grow thin films of particular (metastable) compounds.LAFIGO is crucial for the newly started research activity of Dr Ionela Lindfors-Vrejoiu. Moreover, it will form a new nucleus in the excellence initiative ''Quantum matter and Materials'', and in the recently established CRC 1238
