EXC 284: Multimodal Computing and Interaction. Robust, Efficient and Intelligent Processing of Text, Speech, Visual Data and High Dimensional Representations
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Die digitale Gesellschaft hat die Art und Weise, wie wir leben und arbeiten verändert. Digitale Inhalte existieren in verschiedenen Modalitäten, z.B. Text, Audio, Bilder, Video und Augmented Reality. Der Cluster “Multimodal Computing and Interaction” untersuchte, wie man multimodale Inhalte robust, effizient und unter Wahrung der Privatsphäre organisiert, versteht und durchsuchbar macht und wie man zuverlässige Systeme schafft, die eine natürliche und intuitive multimodale Interaktion unterstützen. Im Cluster arbeiteten Forscher der Universität des Saarlandes (Fachbereiche Informatik, Mathematik & Sprachwissenschaften und Technologie), der Max-Planck-Institute für Informatik und für Softwaresysteme und des Deutschen Forschungszentrums für Künstliche Intelligenz zusammen. Der Cluster war sehr erfolgreich • in der Forschung, • in der Qualifizierung junger Wissenschaftler, und • in der Weiterentwicklung der Universität des Saarlandes. Die Forschungsergebnisse bestechen durch Qualität, Anzahl und Interdisziplinarität. Ein Höhepunkt ist die YAGO Wissensbasis, eine erweiterbare Ontologie hoher Qualität und Abdeckung. YAGO enthält mehrere Millionen Fakten über mehrere Millionen Entitäten. Diese wurden automatisch aus Wikipedia extrahiert. Yago ist ein Durchbruch in Qualität und Umfang, war Grundlage für viele Arbeiten im Cluster auf der Schnittstelle zwischen Informatik und Computerlinguistik, und ist die Blaupause für alle nachfolgenden Wissensbasen, etwa von Microsoft oder Google. Die Yago-Publikation wurde bereits mehr als 3000 mal zitiert. Andere Durchbrüche sind unsere Arbeiten zur Erfassung von Bewegungen natürlicher Personen ohne die Verwendung von Markierungen und die Integration von Sprache und Bildverstehen. Der Cluster förderte junge Wissenschaftler durch Programme für unabhängige Nachwuchsgruppen (mit mehr als 50% des Budgets), für Postdocs und Doktoranden. Mehr als 230 Studenten haben im Cluster ihre Doktorarbeit angefertigt und über 200 Nachwuchswissenschaftler wurden auf Universitätsstellen berufen. Alumni des Clusters warben 10 Emmy Noether, 20 ERC Starting und 6 ERC Consolidator Grants ein. Die PIs des Clusters erhielten prestigereiche Auszeichnungen, darunter 1 ERC Synergy, 2 ERC Advanced Grants, und 1 Leibnizpreis. Das Saarland und die Universität des Saarlandes machten beträchtliche Zusagen zur Verstetigung der Clusterforschung. Sie wurden mehr als eingehalten und 11 neue Professuren wurden geschaffen, die die herausragende Stellung der Informatik in der Universität und ihre Verbindung zu anderen Fächern weiter verstärkt haben. Die den Cluster stützenden Institutionen bilden den Saarland Informatics Cluster (SIC). SIC ist durch den Cluster stark gewachsen. Insbesondere, das Center for IT-Security, Privacy, and Accountability (CISPA) wurde 2011 als BMBF-Kompetenzzentrum eingerichtet und 2018 in das Helmholtzzentrum für IT-Sicherheit überführt. SIC ist nun eine in Europa einzigartige Konzentration von Informatikforschung.
