New approaches to pulsed light generation in semiconductor quantum dot lasers

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2018 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 389193326

Scientific goal of this proposal is the first experimental demonstration of ultra-stable pulsed multiwavelength emission generated by micro-lasers based on tailored semiconductor quantum dots. These novel lasers feature top-level spectral properties and are characterized by their unique ultrafast carrier dynamics. At first, it is necessary to develop new numeric and analytic methods and build solid foundations to describe the generation of ultrashort optical pulses. The experimental demonstration and characterization of novel quantum dot based pulsed lasers, including micro-ring and micro-disc lasers, is the focus of this proposal together with investigations of edge-emitting quantum dot lasers and their nonlinear emission characteristics. New concepts of selective doping of the laser-active zone during sample growth as well as the specific spectral broadening of the quantum dot gain spectra will be investigated. Furthermore, comprehensive characterizations of the frequency and amplitude stability of the generated optical pulse trains will be considered, also subject to delayed optical and electronic feedback schemes with the aim to enhance the understanding and the unique potential of semiconductor quantum dot based wavelength-versatile micro-ring and micro-disc lasers as a new generation of ultra-compact semiconductor quantum dot laser.
