Term
since 2017
Project identifier

The present project aims to examine bilingual children’s prominence-management behaviour in contexts in which they have the possibility to use all their language resources flexibly when involved in dialogues or story-telling activities in which they and their interlocutors code-switch constantly. In particular, the analysis of code-switching will provide new insights into how they represent prominence structures and discourse layers in their minds. We intend to observe bilingual communication as it unfolds in natural circumstances, whereby children are free to make meaning based on their more or less conscious language preferences, align to the preferences of their interlocutors and develop strategies to resolve challenges in communication.
