We are planning five work packages in the third funding period. 1) Stabilization of large azaacenes; novel protecting groups such as double cross-bridging will be developed and applied. 2) Synthesis of tetraazaundecacene -tridecacene and -pentadecacene as soluble and processable species. This will be made possible by the use of novel protecting groups, developed by us, in the proposed azaacene backbones. 3) Magnetic, optical and electronic properties of novel large azaacenes will be investigated. 4) Azaacene-based diradical systems are to be synthesized and systematically investigated. 5) Radical functionalization reactions for azaacenes are to be developed and applied.
