The project aims at a comprehensive, monographic description of the Akkadian noun patterns, which until now has never been accomplished. The following questions shall be addressed in detail:a) A complete survey of all Akkadian noun patterns.b) Every Akkadian noun inherited from Proto-Semitic shall be described in terms of its pattern. The material will be culled from the dictionaries Akkadisches Handwörterbuch and Chicago Assyrian Dictionary and supplemented by the materials collected in the running the DFG project Etymological Dictionary of Akkadian (principal investigators: Prof. M. Krebernik/Prof. M. P. Streck).c) A morphological and semantic analysis of all noun patterns.d) An analysis of chronological and geographical differences in the form and use of noun patterns.e) An analysis of different layers of loanwords in the system of Akkadian noun patterns.f) A comparison of Akkadian noun patterns with those of the most important Semitic (written) languages.
