Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
The project was one of four projects within the CorsicArchive project bundle and addressed specific questions of the hydrologic cycle by isotope methods. Research objectives were the spatial dynamics and temporal patterns of the water molecule. Stable and radiogenic isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen were used to trace water along its pathway from evaporation, during atmospheric moisture transport, precipitation, and soil infiltration to plant water uptake. The model for plat water uptake by pine trees resulted in a highly interesting but also controversial explanation for the so-far still unexplained stable isotope pattern of xylem water with respect to precipitation. All data sets of the isotope hydrology project’s publications are made available on the open access long-term data repository PANGAEA1. A strong and successful partnership between FAU and the hydrogeology group at the Département d'Hydrogéologie at Université de Corse Pascal Paoli, Corte (France) was established. Project results were presented to public stakeholders and policy makers on a workshop in France that led to media reconnection in local but also nationwide French newspapers such as Le Figaro. Despite these advancements, research is far from being complete and the data of the CorsicArchive project is not yet analyzed in its entirety.
