Histopathology Service

Applicant Dr. Sarah Fairless
Subject Area Molecular and Cellular Neurology and Neuropathology
Term from 2015 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 262890264

Histopathological analysis, both preparation and quantification of tissue samples, is an essential, although time-consuming, part of the evaluation of animal disease models. This is particularly true for complex disorders such as EAE and autoimmune optic neuritis, where many different parameters are involved including inflammation, demyelination and axonal/neuronal injury. In order to standardize and expedite this process, a histopathological service will be offered to all the projects involved in this proposal, where tissue (such asretinas, optic nerves, brains and spinal cords) will be sent directly to the histopathological service for processing and staining (both conventional histology and immunohistochemistry). The service will then provide detailed analysis using quantitative technologies and various microscopic techniques, before returning the tissue together with the data analysis to the individual project groups. All projects incorporating experimental animal models in their work programs will make use of this service.
