Manipulation of Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Cytokine Production and Dysregulated Resolution of Inflammation by Helicobacter pylori (A04)

H. pylori is a paradigm of persistent infection and chronic inflammation in humans, while highly virulent strains are eliminated rapidly by the mouse immune system. We aim to understand regulatory processes in humans and mice that control the continuation or resolution of inflammation, and explore in detail the manipulation of inflammasome formation, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, cytokine receptor dynamics and immune regulatory factors during H. pylori infection. The involved bacterial factors hijacking molecular checkpoints of resolution will be identified. This approach will identify novel key pathogenicity determinants serving as potential new drug targets for resolution of inflammation.
