Adopting antique knowledge by Christians – Didactics of images between Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages (A04)

Subject Area Medieval History
Term from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 244798977

Project Description

TP A 04 is comparing debates on religious icons and saints cults in pagan religions, judaism, christendom and islam from the 4th to the 9th centuries. Which role played images in religious didactics and as a media for the transmission of spiritual salvation and physical healing? Can we assume a homogenous imagery in Christendom in that period? Or did it differ and vary between cultural and social spaces (Christendom in the greek-byzantine, the latin-roman and the northalpine zone)?
