Project Details
Stellar Census and Kinematic Structures in the Solar Neighbourhood (B07*)
Subject Area
Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term
from 2015 to 2018
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 138713538
The solar neighbourhood is our study ground to examine fundamental properties of the Milky Way stellar content and learn about the further reaches of the Galaxy. We want to complete the census of nearby stars and investigate the kinematic structure of the extended solar neighbourhood using large surveys such as Gaia, Pan-STARRS1 and CARMENES. We will determine the stellar luminosity function and mass density on the basis of a complete nearby star sample, search and characterize moving groups and determine their spatial structure and origin, improving the understanding of the solar neighbourhood composition as part of the Milky Way Galaxy.
