Semiclassical Structure of Resonance States in Chaotic Systems with Escape

Subject Area Statistical Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Complex Systems, Soft and Fluid Matter, Biological Physics

Chaotic eigenfunctions of closed systems show semiclassically a uniform phase-space distribution. Physical systems are often suitably described by dynamical systems with partial escape, like optical microcavities. Resonance states of such systems are not uniform, but instead have a multifractal phase-space structure. It is approximately explained by a product structure on stable and unstable directions of the hyperbolic classical dynamics. In order to obtain a fundamental understanding of resonance states for systems with partial escape we want to (i) derive a semiclassical theory based on periodic orbits, (ii) investigate the statistics of quantum fluctuations, (iii) analyze the non-trivial limit of full escape, and (iv) apply these results to the experimentally relevant class of optical microcavities.
