Project Details
Hyperglycemia-induced metabolic reprogramming drives neutrophil cytotoxicity in atherosclerosis (A06)
Subject Area
Cardiology, Angiology
Term
since 2014
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 238187445
Hyperglycemia is among the most important risk factors for atherosclerosis and its complications. Using mouse models of atherosclerosis, we will link the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) with hyperglycemia-accelerated plaque destabilization. Mechanistically, we will focus on how hyperglycemia reprograms neutrophils and their progenitors and how hyperglycemia alters the ability if NETs to kill host cells. Finally, we will integrate this knowledge to generate innovative approaches to boycott NET-driven cell death in hyperglycemia.
