Interleukin-22 in kidney regeneration

Subject Area Nephrology
Term from 2014 to 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 252090668

Final Report Year 2018

Final Report Abstract

The project turned out to be quite successful in terms of generating new and in part unexpected insights in the biology of IL-22 in the kidney. To my best knowledge, we were the only ones in the world working on this topic and could come up with a bunch of new concepts following our initial paper published in J Am Soc Nephrol on IL-22 in acute kidney injury. We explored kidney regeneration, chronic progressive kidney atrophy, and renal cancer, just to name a few. As the most exciting result we identified IL-22R expression as a prognostic biomarker for clear cell RCC and raised a rationale also for using IL-22 blockade as a sensitizer for cytotoxic therapies. If there is a role for this in the current phase of check point inhibitors remains to be seen.
