Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

Im Einklang mit dem Leitbild der Freien Universität Berlin widmete sich die Graduiertenschule für Nordamerikastudien (GSNAS) der Analyse des amerikanischen Freiheitsideals, der Bedeutung demokratischer Werte und den Herausforderungen, denen diese Werte in einer globalisierten Welt ausgesetzt sind. Die Graduiertenschule für Nordamerikastudien hat dabei die Herausforderungen des amerikanischen Freiheitsideals auf sozialer, wirtschaftlicher und kultureller Ebene zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts untersucht. In der ersten Förderperiode konzentrierte sich das Forschungsprogramm der Graduiertenschule auf die Untersuchung von Globalisierungsprozessen, transnationalen Abhängigkeiten und Gefahren im Kontext Amerikas nach dem 11. September (2006-2012). Vor dem Hintergrund der weltweiten Finanzkrise 2008/09 widmete sich die Forschung während der zweiten Förderperiode einem interdisziplinär fundierten Verständnis des krisenhaften Wandels (2012-2019). Diese Untersuchung umfasste die Ursachen für und Auseinandersetzung mit Krisen in der amerikanischen Geschichte, die Polarisierung amerikanischer Innenpolitik sowie die Analyse der Auswirkungen der Globalisierung auf die amerikanische Wirtschaft und Außenpolitik. Ferner zählte die Untersuchung der Rolle von Religion und Medien als auch die Funktion von Kunst und Kultur in Zeiten der Krise zu den Forschungsschwerpunkten. In den kommenden Jahren wird sich die Arbeit an der GSNAS auf die Transformationen der ‚Demokratie‘ in Nordamerika konzentrieren. Die Forschung an der Graduiertenschule erfolgte im Rahmen einer curricular koordinierten Zusammenarbeit von sechs wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen aus den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften. Die Verortung dieser Untersuchungen an einer universitären Einrichtung außerhalb Nordamerikas bot die Möglichkeit einer vergleichenden Außenperspektive, die Forderungen nach transnationalen Ansätzen in den American Studies Rechnung trug. Die Graduiertenschule verfolgte in ihrer Arbeit zwei Ziele: (i) einerseits das Wissen über nordamerikanische Gesellschaften und Kulturen durch innovative Forschung in sechs Disziplinen – Geschichte, Kultur- und Literaturwissenschaft, Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie und Wirtschaftswissenschaften – zu erweitern und (ii) darüber hinaus Spezialist*innen und Spezialisten zu Nordamerika auszubilden, für die ein Bedarf in universitären und weiteren beruflichen Kontexten wie der öffentlichen Verwaltung und den Medien besteht. Zur Erreichung dieses Ziels etablierte die GSNAS ein Lehrangebot, das disziplinäre Forschungsmethoden mit weitergefassten, interdisziplinären Kursen verband, die die neun Forschungsgebiete der Schule abdeckten. Ein engmaschiger Betreuungsprozess mit einem dreiköpfigen Mentor*innenteam wurde etabliert, um Doktorand*innen die bestmögliche wissenschaftliche Unterstützung zukommen zu lassen und ihnen zu ermöglichen, die Arbeit in den avisierten drei bzw. vier Jahren Förderdauer abzuschließen.
