The Research Training Group is carried out by the research groups algebra/discrete mathematics, applied analysis, topology/geometry, stochastics and combinatorial optimisation of the University of Osnabrück. In the last few years, all working groups involved have successfully conducted research projects within their own working fields with strong aspects of geometry with combinatorial methods. It is the target of the Research Training Group to combine this joint interest in combinatorial problems in geometry. The central subject "Combinatorial Structures in Geometry" shall be investigated in research projects from various directions. Not only is it targeted at making the relation between the research projects of the working groups algebra, analysis, topology, stochastics and combinatorial structures in geometry visible. One main focus of the PhD programme is the bridge building between the participating research fields by joint projects of different research groups. This should result in new methods and yields a new view on interesting problems. Moreover, the interdisciplinary cooperation of the various working groups of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and computer science shall allow the PhD student to look over the rim of a tea cup. This is meant to counteract the usual specialisation in one's own working field. The research groups involved hope for outstanding theses due to this interdisciplinary approach, which have been inspired by this cooperation. The PhD projects of the scholarship holders will be accompanied by a qualification programme with interdisciplinary lectures, seminars and workshops. International contacts allow the integration of international researchers by means of visits to Osnabrück or guest stays of the scholarship holders at foreign universities.
