The project aims at the creation of a reference corpus of Middle Low German and Low Rhenish. The Middle Low German and Low Rhenish documents from the period between 1200 and 1650 will be digitized, annotated and made accessible in a sustainable manner. Within the framework of the joint initiative named Korpus historischer Texte des Deutschen, the project covers Middle Low German and Low Rhenish texts from the late Middle Ages to the Early Modern Age. The corpus is arranged by regional varieties, chronology and domains of writing (1. administration, 2. law, 3. knowledge transfer, 4. religion, 5. literature, 6. private texts, 7. inscriptions). The objective is the creation of a comprehensive database that enables future historical linguistic research to take into account all levels of language description. Thus, it e.g. provides the basis for a new Middle Low German grammar book. Furthermore, the corpus will function as an empirical base for text-related mediaeval studies. As a part of the above mentioned joint initiative the project makes use of the methods and the annotation tool CorA developed for the affiliated corpus projects Old German, Middle High German and Early New German. The texts are transcribed, prepared for the annotation (tokenized and divided into sentences) and lemmatized as well as grammatically annotated (PoS and morphology). All texts will be made available through Annis, an architecture for the analysis of complex annotated linguistic corpora.
