Gender relations in the Arab World are undergoing rapid changes that are triggered both by political, cultural and economic transformations and by the activities of non-governmental organizations. Controversies over new gender orders arise primarily out of discrepancies between religious and secular visions for the future. The research project proposed here aims at studying these changes in Syria and Morocco by means of ethnographic methods and at elucidating the perspectives of the female and male actors involved. The main focus is on students, who are a modernizing force and future elite and thus of particular importance.
