The octupole excitations, their evolution with the mass A, the charge number Z and with the angular momentum I is the subject of the present day investigations. This includes the excitation energies, the electric dipole transitions and the interplay of the octupole and the quadrupole modes. The octupole degree of freedom being a reflection asymmetric mode plays an important role in alpha-decay and in fission. Our project is devoted to the analysis of the experimental data, to the development of new theoretical approaches to the description of the properties of the octupole excitations and to the interpretation of the relevant experimental data. We will consider the properties of the recently observed long alternating parity bands in nuclei with axial deformation, and furthermore two-phonon quadrupole-octupole 1- states in spherical nuclei and the electric dipole transitions in different nuclei. We are planning to develop a collective model approach for the interpretation of the existing experimental data. We will apply a microscopic approach based on the fermionic Q-phonon formalism. The results obtained will be used to suggest new experiments. This research project finally leads to a deeper and unifying insight into the important role which is played by the octupole mode in the structure of nuclei.
