Project identifier

Using a concerted effort of simulations and x-ray experiments we will study the spatio-temporal organization of lipid membranes on different scales, considering three non-equilibrium situations: (A) the relaxation towards equilibrium after a shape change of a multi-component membrane, (B) the formation of metastable pre-pores in response to an external activation, and (C) the non-equilibrium, steady-state fluctuations of membranes with active proteins/pumps. In the simulations we will employ a multi-scale approach ranging from molecular dynamics simulations to augmented Helfrich-Hamiltonian models. The experiments will utilize sophisticated x- ray techniques.
